I don't want to say too much about the Kindle Fire, suffice to say that it looks great. That is not necessarily a good thing in my opinion. I'm a fan of open source, such as ePub books, but Amazon seem intent on holding on to the market and not giving anyone else a slice. Like some fat kid on the playground that has been given a massive bag of sweets and refuses to share. Actually, add to that allegory the fat kid throwing rocks at any other kids with sweets and that is closer to the mark. Apple are not much better, but iBooks is crap and they allow for consumers to download other ebook apps, so at least they are pretending to share their sweets, even if they are making the other kids pay...
Enough about the fat kids! Hidden away on a small but not insignificant patch of the playground and with sweets aplenty are Kobo. I reviewed their Wireless eReader earlier this year and it is a great, if basic, eReader and I highly recommend it, especially considering the low price on WH Smiths.
I've been waiting for the Kobo Touch since it was launched in Canada a few months ago, and they were always allusive about when the Touch would be available in the UK. Well, after stumbling onto the news that it is now available in the UK almost by accident I want to shout it from the rooftops! The Kobo Touch looks fantastic and they have a brilliant range of books on their store for Amazon-rivaling prices. Shame they decided to launch it the same week as the Fire. Hint for the future, the UK is very limited in the way of eReaders, so make some noise when everyone else is quiet, don't whisper the news when your main competitors are shouting!
I hope to have a review online soon, so watch this space.
JA
P.S. If you didn't already know, the Kindle Fire won't be availble in the UK until next year...
