Review: Kochi Wanaba - A Graphic Novel by Jamie Smart

Review: Kochi Wanaba - A Graphic Novel by Jamie Smart

I like Jamie Smart a lot, especially the cuddlier side such as Space Raoul, Find Chaffy and Whubble. I'm not such a fan of the psychotic side of his work, such as Bear and Ubu Bubu, but that is merely personal preference.

His latest work is Kochi Wanaba, a free web comic that is available to all, but most certainly only suitable for adults! Read on for our short review...

Put all of the cuteness of Chaffy in a blender, stick in the evilness of Ubu, add some comedy from Raoul and some swearing from Bear. Now turn the blender on. What you have here is Kochi Wanaba, which is, in my humble opinion, Jamie Smart's best work. I love the wistful sepia tones and adorable drawings in stark contrast with the violence and anger of the story.

It is quite a short graphic novel, consisting of 6 chapters and 94 pages (including the front and back covers, I should add). The ending was a bit odd, maybe a little bit of an anti-climax, but the love and attention that has gone into the book is palpable. If you have within you a dark sense of humour, please read Kochi.

I cannot recommend it highly enough. It is free, it is online, so what are you waiting for?
